Cleveland is one of America’s great industrial cities. Founded in the early 1800s, the first commercial push came from the opening of the Ohio and Erie Canal in 1832. It was during this time that the town’s name, originally Cleaveland, was changed to Cleveland, because a local newspaper needed to trim it to fit into the masthead.
After the Civil War, the city, located on the shores of Lake Erie, became a bustling center for shipping and industry. Iron, coal, steel, limestone and manufacturing all came together in Cleveland, and early in the 20th century it was a top apparel and auto manufacturing location. Some of the country’s largest companies were founded here, as it became a center for industrial might. It was the home of John D. Rockefeller, who organized the Standard Oil Company and became the world’s first billionaire. Another Cleveland industrialist was Mark Hanna, a steel and shipping magnate, who also was the political boss behind President William McKinley.
Cleveland is still the home of more than 20 major industrial corporations, and many of the Fortune 500 companies are nearby. In addition, it is home to the world-famous Cleveland Clinic medical complex and the internationally renowned Cleveland Orchestra. It has recently become famous as the home of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, a 150,000-square-foot center filled with images and memorabilia about that unique American musical genre.
